Chapter 1: The Unthrown Spear

~700 BCE Eastern Iranian Basin • POV: Farnaka

The third ewe backed into the mud-brick wall and went still. Salt-straw fell from her lip.

Farnaka pressed his thumbs into the gate timber. Mutton tallow caked beneath his fingernails, waxy and cold, left over from rubbing down the kite reeds before sundown. The fire outside had died to gray knuckles of dung-ash.

Three dogs came out of the salt-brush. They stood shoulder-high to a yearling calf, with ribs ridged outside the hide like scraped horn. In the chest of each beast, a vertical slit parted and shut with a wet rattle.

“Hold the syllable, boy,” Arshan had drilled for three winters. “The line falls if your mouth stops.”

The dog hit an invisible wall. Its front shoulder caved with the wet crack of a bow snapping. The beast went flat into the loess dust, driven down through the center of its chest-slit. Thick, cold fluid splattered across Farnaka's bare ankle.

His right hand still held the ash stake against his chest. He looked at the dust clearing five paces ahead. Nothing stood there. Air rushed into the vacuum, popping the drums of his ears like a sudden drop in mountain altitude.

Then came the trailing hum. It was thin and high, clean as struck bronze, shivering across the dark courtyard before dissolving into the wind.

Regional Cartography

The Oxus Basin & The Cracked Seal

Explore the ancient eastern Iranian piedmont (~700 BCE), from the deep loess silt washes to the high mountain sanctuary where the First Chord was struck.

Map of the Oxus Basin — The Cracked Seal
The Silt Washes

40-foot-deep loess dust dunes. Infrasonic acoustic fluidization zone where benthic placoderms hunt trade caravans.

The Oasis Circle

Zarathustra's mud-brick hearth, Farnaka's sheepfold, and the braided river reed-beds where the toy kite-wings were cut.

Scavenger Ravine

Rugged gorge choked with celestial black-iron debris. Picket skirmishes against entropic shadow-crawlers.

The Cracked Seal

The ancient megalithic stone amphitheater. The living metronome holds the line until vocal cords hemorrhage to lock Seal 1.

Field Entomology & Physics

The Acoustic Bestiary

Entities of Druj (Entropy) and ancient primeval horrors governed by acoustic physics and anatomical pressure points.

Filter: All | Druj Entropic | Primeval Fossil
Primeval Placoderm Hazard Tier: Apex

The Loess-Crusher

Siltosteus Terrenus

A 20-foot armored benthic sediment-swimmer. Uses 12–20 Hz infrasonic pectoral vibration to liquefy fine loess dust into a fluid bed. Sinks pack mules without a splash; shearing jaw plates snap bronze and bone with 8,000 psi of guillotine crush.

Acoustic Counter: Lattice Edge parries ricochet off cranial plates; strike must thread the nuchal joint during dust exhalation.

Whisperling

The Seated Want

Cannot invent a vice; seats itself under mortal skin and amplifies an impulse until the human believes it was their own idea all along. Unkillable while seated. Violence becomes possible only after the mortal consciously refuses the thought.

Rule of Meat: Off the host, it is foul meat that tears with simple bronze or wing-tap.
Entropic Hunter Major Boss 1

Carrion Hounds

The Chest-Mouth

Dog-high, too many joints, white external ribs like scraped bowls, and a mouth in the chest breathing without a throat. They track mortal panic through the scrub. Sherah remains invisible to their scent.

Consequence: Farnaka sees the dog fold inward as if struck by an unthrown spear.
Acoustic Score

The Sound of the Seven Choirs

Written to the rhythm of European symphonic metal. Heavy melodic guitars, driving double-bass, and soaring operatic voices echo ancient Bactrian harmonic resonance.

About the Author

Who is Magic Missile Mike (M³)?

It began in a neighbor's backyard in the summer of 1985. Eight years old, armed with pine branches, expecting a brawl in the grass. Instead, someone rolled out polyhedral dice and opened a basic box set. The lack of wood-on-wood impact felt dull for five minutes. Then the Dungeon Master spoke. The mental theater delivered bloodier, heavier skirmishes than any stick could match. Decades of kitchen tables, cold pizza crusts, and Dragon Con floor marathons followed.

Commercial fiction filled entire shelves with handsome winged boyfriends. That never fit. Bernard Cornwell gave historical combat its rightful mud, shattered bone, and tavern pragmatism. Pierce Brown brought sheer kinetic velocity. Unfeathered combines both with acoustic mechanics. Here, celestials are crystalline executioners tuned to standing waves, harmonic shears, and brutal infrasound.

Magic Missile Mike (M³) writes at the intersection of Bronze-Age Iranian grit and crunchy progression mechanics. The setting places Zarathustra on the 700 BCE Oxus frontier before dogma settled. Battles pulse to the tempo of European symphonic metal. It belongs to anyone who recognizes dice bouncing off a taped cardboard screen or foam swords whistling in a public park.

"The Kmart plastic bag holding the beanbags on the DM screen is too real. The fact that the acoustic fluidization beast operates on real physics is insane."

RedRisingReader Yesterday

"Finally an angel book where angels aren’t handsome dates. Having the mortal camera be a junior priest who can only hear the consequences is brilliant."
